FAQ Career
What does a Commercial Pilot
Licence allow me to do?
Once you have obtained your Commercial Pilot Licence, you will be
ready to choose a path toward a career in aviation. This involves
obtaining additional qualifications, generally through one or two of
the following training options:
•Flight instructor course: gain the skills you need to train
others
•Float plane training: find employment as a bush pilot,
transporting goods and hunters
•Multi-engine IFR course: obtain the necessary qualifications to
fly as an air taxi pilot
Is it easy to find work in the
field of aviation?
Aviation is a rapidly expanding field, with growth expected to
continue for another 10 years. Experienced pilots are hard to come
by and in high demand. However, once you have obtained your
Commercial Pilot Licence, you will need to build up additional
flight time over a 2 to 5 year “apprenticeship” period before the
industry will take an interest in you. Some 80% of motivated pilots
are able to find work.
What does being an instructor
involve?
The easiest and most efficient path to the world of commercial
aviation is instruction. As a flight instructor, you will generally
fly in a familiar region, under relatively good weather conditions
and in simple aircraft. Even with limited experience, you should
have no trouble finding employment. Flight instruction is gratifying
work that lets you help others fulfill their dreams, while allowing
you to earn a living and build flight hours in your own region. |
What does being a bush pilot
involve?
This is demanding, seasonal work. You will spend some 8 months a
year in the North. Bush flying is ideal for those who enjoy nature
and rugged backcountry living. Given the complex flying and highly
variable conditions, every day presents a new challenge.
Accordingly, employers look for pilots with at least 600 hours of
flight time and 100 hours on floats. It may be possible to start
with fewer logged hours, provided you are willing to split your time
between work on the ground as an all-around assistant and piloting.
The dispatcher will have you fly simple routes in good weather
conditions.
What does the work of an air
taxi pilot involve?
Taxiing is generally the last step prior to working for commercial
airlines. It is almost impossible to begin a career in commercial
aviation with this specialty. Flight conditions are often difficult,
the aircraft are complex, weather conditions may be demanding (e.g.,
storms, ice, strong winds) and you will frequently find yourself in
remote regions. Given the demands of the job, employers generally
require pilots to have a minimum of 1000 flight hours. |
